In the Trials with Shari

There are people in this life that we meet that bless us so much more than they will ever comprehend.  Shari is one of those friends.  Her heart for sharing even in trials will encourage you all so very much.  Thank you so much Shari!  I love you girl!
--
Hi! I’m Shari. What a delight it is to join you ladies here at The Houtz House Party! Thanks for inviting me to contribute Kelly!

I write over at Three Monkeys in the Jungle where I share about motherhood, homeschooling, and our adventures in life. I’ve been wife to my hard working husband, Casey, for 7.5 years and we have three children, Sean {4.5}, Logan {3.5}, and Ella {2.5}. We just recently moved to Vilonia, Arkansas {a tiny town just north of Little Rock, AR}. Between long work schedules and three energetic children, there isn’t much time for quality marriage building {hello date nights at home!}. Thursday night is our “Friday” night and we usually stay up a little later than normal to watch a movie or play a game together.
First off, I want you to know that no two days are ever alike in our household. After we began to settle back into a normal routine after our big move, I created a “loose” block schedule that included what we “normally” do during the periods of “morning,” “afternoon,” and “evening” to encourage a more productive day. If you don’t think you run on much of a schedule, just try writing down what you normally do starting from when you wake up and you may just see you have a “pattern” or a general schedule to your day. Then just add in your cleaning tasks and activities. I like to leave lots of room for mothering my children and surprise messes.

I had every intention of sharing what a day from our life is like with you for this series but my life just hasn’t been normal since our move. As hard as I tried, I just couldn’t get into a routine or snap out of what I thought was perhaps a feeling of depression. Moving is just really tough physically, financially, and emotionally so it wasn’t exactly alarming. But, there was more going on in my life. On Monday February 4th I had an odd feeling some of my symptoms were eerily familiar and I took a pregnancy test. This was quite surprising as we’d been taking measures to prevent pregnancy for two and a half years. I completely jumped out of my boots when the test showed up positive! I was literally shaking all over from the shock of this new discovery for thirty minutes afterward.
You see, I’ve secretly or sometimes not-so-secretly desired a fourth baby for over a year now but with my husband’s job situation and having three children so close in age {all going through the toddler/preschool years together!}, my husband was just not ready and didn’t want us to begin trying until he was at least more stable financially. Finding out that I was “miraculously” pregnant was a huge surprise and I was elated. I just couldn’t stop smiling. That was the first day.
Friday the 8th I had a doctor visit that turned into a nightmare as the sweet baby {discovered to be 6w6d along} that I was carrying was revealed to be located in my left fallopian tube very much outside of my uterus. I was devastated. A doctor came in and told me that I had no option but to go to surgery that very afternoon. I was bawling. The doctor and ultrasound tech left the room so I could call my husband and then my mom. Once I felt somewhat composed, I drove the hour back to my house from the doctor’s office to get my husband and kids to return back to the hospital {I’m surprised that I made it home alive as I was having to see to drive through tear filled eyes}. I’d never been so scared in my entire life.

I’m sharing this very personal albeit brief account with you all today to say that sometimes life doesn’t go as expected. Sometimes our best laid plans get ruined. Sometimes we may have to ask other people for help just to get through the day. So, as badly as many of us moms desire order and routine in our lives for our sakes as well as for our children and husbands, we have to be willing to let go and let God guide us through the unexpected or even the expected rough patches.

You may not be experiencing a physically and emotionally painful situation like the death of a loved one, a very ill child, a miscarriage, or an ectopic pregnancy and subsequent surgery, but you may be dealing with morning sickness, the flu, or a husband who travels a lot for work. Life throws curveballs that don’t fit neatly into schedules. So, I hope you find my situation and advice to be helpful wherever you are at in life.

My tips for making it through a much unexpected schedule disruption:
Diet
We didn’t eat every meal at a fast food joint but we did eat out more often than we usually do and I think my husband and kids had hotdogs a few times which is usually a rare treat for us. We’ve also been eating cereal which is something I usually avoid for breakfast in favor of more homemade options. Being willing to let go of our usual standards was a way to reduce stress. I’ll also say that I love a well-stocked freezer and before my surgery I had in my freezer bags of browned hamburger as well as frozen b/s chicken breasts, roasts, pork chops, and bags of leftover soup. It’s easy to plan frozen dinners to have in the freezer before a baby is due or if you’re exceptionally organized at freezer cooking but keeping even a few items on hand that aren’t planned for anything in particular {such as always keeping a stock of frozen chicken that your hubby can toss in a slow cooker} may be really helpful should something unexpected come up and you can’t cook. Having at least a general idea of your inventory is really helpful too so you can tell your husband in the case that he needs to prepare a meal in an emergency situation.
Cleaning
The day after my surgery, I felt guilty about how messy my kitchen was {I’d sort of neglected it with all the stress of the previous week} and decided to at least unload and reload the dishwasher, wipe down the counters, and sweep the floor {I left the pile of dirt for someone else to bend down to sweep up though}. I was in a bit of pain and was really pushing myself to get that much done but I didn’t do much else for a few days. Your house won’t start to rot just because you have to take some time off cleaning or minimize your usual cleaning expectations. I have a “daily focus area” list that has my home divided up into five sections and I assign one focus area per weekday. When life is normal, I don’t neglect the entire house to focus solely on that “focus area.” My routine includes time in the morning for my focus area cleaning and time in the afternoon for general tidying up of other areas of the home. So when things aren’t working out like normal, I drop the focus cleaning and just do general tidying as I am capable of physically. Be reasonable about what you can really accomplish and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Help
Like I said above, don’t be afraid to ask for help. The number one most helpful thing that happened after my surgery was that my parents came to help us out for a couple days. I didn’t have to ask them to come but I knew deep down that I really did want them to come for emotional support if nothing else. It turned out that they helped with the kids, keeping up with the dishes, and the cooking {my mom is a great cook!}. But, the emotional support and just having my mind on something else {visiting with my mom} was exceptionally invaluable. My husband took off some time from work and the kids helped out some too. I’d be willing to bet that friends and family that live nearby are willing to help if asked. Sometimes people don’t offer because they’re afraid of intruding but are perfectly willing when asked. And, giving food is always a great way to help someone out during a physical or emotional trial.
Prayer
I’m going to be honest, this has been such an whirlwind ordeal that I haven’t been reading my Bible as much as I should and we don’t even have a church yet here where we moved to because my husband works Sundays and he has our only vehicle. But, other people were praying for me and I was praying for strength very often throughout my time waiting to go into the surgery and afterward as I started to grieve again. God didn’t take away my pain but instead He placed unexpected people in my life that brought the very encouraging words I needed and I know He provided that for me.
Relax
When an unexpected event arrives at your door, be willing to relax and let go of what you normally expect. Don’t spread yourself thin doing what you normally think is necessary. Understand that children and even pets may sense the increased stress level in the home and behavior changes may follow. It is helpful to distract them and provide extra attention for comfort. Be willing to let go of that grip on your schedule because, believe it or not, life won’t suddenly implode into chaos. Relaxing your expectations will give you room to grieve, heal, serve others, pray, or rest – whatever is applicable to your situation.

Sometimes the super mom is not the one who does it all but the one who knows when to let go of her control on her life. Take a step back and reflect on what really is important. If it is necessary to have clean clothes and dishes {I highly recommend paper plates for such situations} then either just do those things or ask for help in getting those tasks accomplished. If you are relegated to spending most of your day on the couch then don’t despair that your kids are being neglected, read books from the couch to them and play with them when you are capable. If you really love blogging and simply can’t clear your mind enough to write then just take a break. Give yourself some grace during a really challenging period of life and when you’re ready, you’ll be that much more up for the task of getting back to your “normal” routine.
Have you been in an emotionally or physically trying situation that disrupted your routine? Feel free to share your number one tip for healing and getting back into a normal routine afterward. Thanks for having me today!

The Holy Spirit

When discussing or thinking about the Holy Spirit a variety of things can come to mind depending on your faith tradition background or what you've heard from other people, read about or even seen on TV.  The term “Holy Spirit” can evoke various images of people running around a church sanctuary “filled with the spirit”, a painting of flames over the head of Jesus’ apostles after His death and resurrection or a dove depicted in a beautiful stained glass window.

source
According to Dictionary.com the Holy Spirit is:

Holy Spirit

noun

1.
the spirit of God.
2.
the presence of God as part of a person's religious experience.
3.

Origin:
1350–1400; Middle English

The Holy Spirit is what God sent to us after Jesus died on the cross. When Jesus died the Holy Spirit equipped His disciples to carry on His work and to teach people about the saving grace of Jesus Christ.  The Holy Spirit enabled them to be successful in their mission.

How do you see the Holy Spirit working in your life?

The Holy Spirit is that feeling inside of you when you are reading God's word and you KNOW it's supposed to be something you read to help you on your journey through this life.  The Holy Spirit is that quiet nudging you feel when you are faced with a life decision.  He is your helper here on earth.

Currently, the women's group at our church is going through Jim Cymbala's When God's Spirit Moves DVD & book series.  I am in complete love with it.  In this series you dive headfirst into scripture teaching you about the Holy Spirit.  In the DVD series it gives first hand accounts of how God's spirit has moved in the lives of people just like you and me.  I love how in the video he says, "No outward teaching can replace the inward power of the Holy Spirit".  In the words of my pastor, "That's POWERFUL!".

The Holy Spirit is powering the Godly teaching we hear each week at church.  The Holy Spirit is making the bible come alive to you and to me.  The Holy Spirit was what I felt that day on that alter when I was 16 in my home church when our CCD teacher John encouraged us to kneel on the alter and pray (Thank you John.).  The Holy Spirit is what called me back to God when I had strayed far from the truth I knew.

What is your experience with the Holy Spirit?

On The Road Again

Life is about change.  It’s about the ebbs and flows and twists and turns and much of the happiness and contentment of our lives is how we deal with all of that.  When I look at myself in the mirror I have to admit that often I don’t deal with it well or the right way.  I cry.  I complain.  I even…GASP…whine.

If you've been a reader of this blog for the last year you know that I've been pretty quiet as of late.  I've been quiet because I've been out of my head in some ways.  And when you are out of your head it’s hard to write.  Or at least it is for me.

We moved into this rental home back in October.  You can read a few posts about that here.  It was our dream to be out in the country with the kids where they would have plenty of room to run and play.  This home is circa 1800s with so much charm!  I was in love from the moment I laid eyes on it.  Sometimes dreams turn into nightmares.  I've written before about some of the issues we've had.  In the last month, everything’s went from bad to much worse.

To make a LONG story short, this house is super old which we knew and a little bit run down cosmetically but nothing major (so it appeared) especially for the rent price.  The guts of the house are another story!  Every month multiple things have broken.  We got  a bill last month for almost $4K for the fuel oil when we were told when we moved in the utilities would run about $200 a month.  We find out now the boiler is 50 years old and the whole system needs replaced.  The roof also needs replaced which we knew.  It keeps leaking and who knows what's between that and the ceiling (aka mold and lots of it).  Approximately $250K worth of remodeling needs done.  They told us it would be best for us to move out because of everything and we totally agree BUT then we needed MORE fuel oil!

There are so many details I’m leaving out but this is the jist of it.  We are expected to pay for all the fuel oil when we were completely mislead about EVERYTHING when we moved into the house in the first place.  We never would have moved in otherwise!  We are moving in with my inlaws next weekend to regroup and make decisions with a clear head. We need to be out before the fuel oil runs out which will probably be in the next week (even though we paid rent through the end of February).

That brings us to today.  Sitting in my dining room (mine for another few days), typing as my little man runs around pretending he is a ninja turtle while the other little ones are napping.  Sitting here FINALLY feeling like everything is really going to be ok with the situation. Sitting here FINALLY able to acknowledge God always has a better way because unlike us he knows our future.

The steps of a man are established by the LORD, when he delights in his way; Psalm 137:23

It is so easy to give other’s advice and to say to them in their time of trial that God is with them.  That God has a plan.  That God is good all the time.  When you are in the midst of trial it is harder to be comforted by those same words.

Those words ARE true.  I think in our times of hardship satan just loves to come in and rock our already rocked world.  The TRUTH is that when God lives in us that door is blocked.

Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.  1 John 4:4

The owner of this farm is tough.  She is old.  Her heart seems to be hardened.  Please pray with me for her.  That is what God wants from us.  To pray for the lost.  Please pray for Mrs. F.

Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved.  Romans 10:1

Into The Word Wednesday- New Years Resolutions

What do you think about New Years resolutions?  Do you make them?  Do you avoid them like the plague?  What about making them at other parts of the year…because perhaps you think new years resolutions are for people who are just going to quit whatever it is they are “resolutioning” anyway?

4 weeks into the new year I sit here thinking about my resolutions or lack thereof.  I honestly don't make resolutions.  I've talked a little bit about a goal for my blog I outlined here.  I started a new business venture I talked about in this post and have goals for that as well.  You can say I have the "business" side of things outlined...but what about the personal side of things?  What about personal goals, spiritual goals.

I began to wonder what the bible says about goals.  I found out that it says a WHOLE LOT!

The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.  Proverbs 21:5

Prepare your work outside; get everything ready for yourself in the field, and after that build your house.  Proverbs 24:27

For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?  Luke 14:28

I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.  Phillipians 3:14

It is obvious to me that to honor the Lord with our goals for our lives is what he desires AS LONG AS THEY ARE GLORIFYING TO HIM.  He wishes to abundantly bless us.

Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.  Psalm 37:4

And finally my search brought me right back to my life verse:

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.  Romans 12:2

What comforting truth in those words in Romans.  It encourages me to reach on toward all my goals personally and professionally but reminds me to pursue those goals with His will at the center of it all.

Perhaps now, i'll pray about some personal goals to set.  Finally losing that baby weight perhaps?

Into The Word Wednesday - Favorites

Simply put, I love the heart of our Into The Word Wednesday family.  These women share so freely and support so wonderfully!  This week it is my turn to highlight a few of my favorite posts from last week.

Denise's post about those pesky "to do" lists really fell in line with what I've been studying this week for bible study about Martha & Mary.  I tend to be more like Martha on most days and it is so truly important to slow down and spend time with Jesus and ONLY Jesus each day.  When I say ONLY i don't mean with the tv on in the background, while text messaging randomly, while finishing that game in Words with Friends.  ONLY HIM!

“Believers look up to you” Not just because you dress the part, look the part or talk the part but because…
“Your lives are echoing the Master’s word!”
“And we really do not have to preach any more because your lifestyle does the work”
That's what it says in Thessalonians and that is the challenge and encouragement that Ugoshi gives us in her post.

Something Struck Me

Something struck me this morning as I was walking into my kitchen to put the kids milk cups back in the fridge after breakfast…I have NO idea WHY it hit me when it did…maybe because with the new year beginning I've been pondering resolutions and goals and how my life will be “different” this year.

Ya know pondering as I’m fighting a cold, and cleaning up spilled milk and starting a new business and being specific and intentional about my blog.  Pondering as my house is a mess, and I feel out of sorts a lot of the time, and my to do list is loaded with more “to dos” than lines marking things complete.  Pondering as I stress about ensuring I am 100% authentic to everyone all the time because that is my #1 pet peeve.  Pondering as I wonder if I let me kids watch too much television, as I am concerned I’m going to get locked in the basement by my 3 year old every time I go down to switch out laundry (because it already happened once), as I think I really do need to make that eye appointment but am avoiding it because I hate the eye dr (if your glasses were as thick as mine and your eyes kept getting worse each year you would want to avoid it too).

Oh yeah that thing that struck me…(see I really get off track easily don’t I…please tell me I’m not the only one)…some days I still wake up and think of myself as that carefree 20 year old…and what struck me is that that was 12 years ago!  I remember my mom telling me when I was probably about 25 and talking to her about how I didn't feel old enough to have a responsible job and my own condo that she didn't feel almost 50.  Life marches along whether we fully realize those moments or not.

Those 12 years were FILLED with all kinds of different experiences.  Boy, am I a different person now.  How can I look back at that girl and simultaneously still think I am the same but yet KNOW I am so different?  It’s a strange paradox.

I truly believe God has PULLED me through much of that time.  I truly believe that He put me where I am for His purpose even though unbeknownst to me I was fighting against it for a portion of that time and gliding through asleep some of it too.  I am a testament to the fact that what God wants to do with you He will.

Do not fear, for I am with you; do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’Isaiah 41:10

For Him to get the glory that He wants I can’t be scared to share anymore.  I can’t be scared to step outside my comfort zone.  It will be insulting to Him for me to ignore the call placed on my heart.

For God did not give us a spirit of timidity (of cowardice, of craven and cringing and fawning fear), but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of calm and well-balanced mind and discipline and self-control. 2 Tim 1:7 (AMP)

Are you scared?  Are you hesitant?  Are you ignoring something in your own life thinking that that “calling” will go away?  I will tell you that for some time if you ignore it you might fade away into the background but God forbid you let it seep back into your mind.  God doesn't go away whether you ignore Him or not.

Another Season

I've come to realize slowly over the past 3 months I am entering a new season as a mother and as a woman.  When I started this blog I was desperate to find an outlet for myself that challenged me in the way I was used to being challenged when I worked outside the home.  I wanted something for “just me”.  Oh I said it was to record our memories; and in part it was, but more so, it was for me to have something that was just mine.

I found something I didn't expect to find and with reinforcement from the blogging community (I didn't even know existed) I've quite humbly realized that it is NOT in fact all about me.  When I look back at my yesterdays I want them to reflect that I served my Lord; that I served my family; that I served my community.  I want this blog to represent the person I pray each day to be.  I want it to reflect my love for my family and friends.  I want it to reflect my love for many different peoples.  I want it to reflect these things because of my love for God as His child.

As I've prayed over this blog and my role as a woman in this life I've realized that I long to encourage women.  I talked a little bit about that in this post earlier this week.

As for this blog I want to be more intentional and specific about its content while probably posting more like 3 days a week instead of 5.  It will still be a scrapbook of my life with littles because THAT is my life and THAT is my WHY.  But I want it’s content to reflect my wish for all mamas to feel that they are not just “getting by” each day but even in those moments when they feel like they are the only one feeling “this” way, or they are “failing at motherhood” that day that they are TRULY not alone and there are those of use that have been there too.  There are more that have “been there” than we ever imagined.  THAT is what I've learned in this last year of blogging.  I am NOT alone.  And THAT my friends, is a beautiful thing.

If you've been reading this blog very long you know my faith is a very integral portion of my life.  I've grown in my faith so much since becoming a mother and specifically since becoming at stay at home mama.  I've clung to His grace in so many of the hard days and am constantly reminded of how when I let Him order my steps as it states in Psalm 119:133 although things may not go smoothly or without trouble I am at peace through it.  I am better able to handle things.

Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me. Psalm 119:133 (KJV)

I like how the English Standard Version says it:

Keep steady my steps according to your promise,
and let no iniquity get dominion over me.

KEEP STEADY IN MY STEPS.  It is a reminder that through the day to day stuff of life or through the hard things or when hit by the unthinkable we can Pray Psalm 119:133 for God to KEEP US STEADY and hold us up.  But the really important part of that verse is  “according to your promise”.  ACCORDING TO YOUR…meaning according to His promise…His ways.

If we pray to God to have Him set our days up how He would like them to go then He can truly show us the path of least resistance.  And when resistance comes he will equip us to gracefully dwell in it and when the time comes, move through it and come out on the other side.

My prayer in 2013 is for this blog and my life to be AUTHENTIC encouragement to women and specifically mothers.  I want to be a place you come to know “it’s ok to feel the way you do”, to not be judged; and I want most of all to be your cheerleader to pursue whatever it is you feel called to.

Love and blessings as we begin this new year: 2013.

In The Word Wednesday – Happy 2nd Birthday boys!

Today is our twin boys 2nd birthday.

Elijah and Jacob I am so blessed to be your mama.  I am so proud of the little people you are.

As I go through Scripture this week I can’t help but look at my reading in reference to things I want to ensure you know from God’s word.

Elijah & Jacob, “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong” (1 Corinthians 16:13).  I pray you never waiver.

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you” (Ephesians 4:32).  Love people and be kind my sweet boys.  You have no idea what is going on in someone else’s life.  I know sometimes it’s hard to do even when you don’t agree with that person or that person has hurt you but I promise you when you look back at your life you will be happy you did those things.  I pray you learn that lesson earlier in life than I did.  And don’t forget that even if someone wrongs you are commanded by God to forgive them the wrong.

The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant
21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?”
22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.[g]
23 “Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24 As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold[h] was brought to him. 25 Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.
26 “At this the servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’27 The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.
28 “But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins.[i] He grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded.
29 “His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay it back.’
30 “But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. 31 When the other servants saw what had happened, they were outraged and went and told their master everything that had happened.
32 “Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. 33 Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ 34 In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.
35 “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.” – Matthew 18: 21-35

Elijah and Jacob lastly, today I encourage you to use the talents God gave you to serve people in LOVE for that is what we are called to do in Galatians 5:13.

Remember boys…

How much do I love you?
