Life a Little Further Down the Road

It’s been awhile.

Just over 2 years to be exact.  In that time there have been growing kids, multiple moves, new adventures and new friends.  Some days it feels like a lifetime other days I literally feel like I blinked.

My kids were ages 3, 2 & 1 at that time.  4 toddlers!  I literally have trouble remembering what my life was truly like back then!

Now, at 5, 4 & 3 many logistical things like going places by myself with the kids or getting them all dressed are so much easier!  They understand they need to hold hands and watch for cars.  They can dress themselves!  (CAN I GET AN AMEN?!?!?!)  Things like discipline and all of them talking loudly at one time are more difficult.  Some days I think I’d trade those days of lining all 4 of them up to change diapers and put pj's on and being awoken in the middle of the night for the newer challenges of the whiny voices, strong willed defiance and lots of differing opinions on every evening’s dinner.

What I've come to understand is that each season comes with fresh blessings as well as fresh challenges.  I also understand that as I become accustomed to one season another is fresh on its heels.  God has grown and challenged me.  God has put me in my place.  God has blessed my ever lovin’ socks off.

Here’s to an older version of The Houtz House Party.

Here’s to continuing to record this story of ours so that J and I are able to look back and be reminded of the moments of our lives that seem to move faster and faster with each step.

But most of all, here's to little boys who NEVER outgrow those plaid ties.

{It's a Typical Day Project} - Pamela

Hello everyone, my name is Pamela and I blog over at Pamela's Heavenly Treats where I make desserts that are healthy for you!  I am a wife of 16 years to a wonderful man and mama of 6 kiddies, 5 boys ages 15, twins 13, 9 and 6 and 1 baby girl 2 1/2 who are the loves of my life!  My life is so hectic, but I wouldn't change it for anything, I will try to share it with you!

~A typical day in My Home~

5:30am I wake up to get breakfast made for the kiddies, listen to my praise and worship music and read my bible and write in my journal, my oldest wakes up at 6:00am, and is downstairs by 6:20am, and then my twins are coming down to eat around 7:00am, and then my 3 little ones come down around 8:30am !

9:00am I clean the kitchen, and start homeschool (somedays we start homeschool at 7:30 or 8:30, I homeschool my 9 and 6 year old, we have been homeschooling for 5 years and I love it.

I try to get a load of clothes in the washer, start the dishwasher, clean the downstairs bathroom, while they are doing their seat work.

What's good about my week is that my hubbie comes in on Monday morning from work, and he is here all week, and goes back to work on Friday until Monday morning!  So he is a great help doing the week.  He takes care of J while I homeschool, that's a plus for me!

It varies with the time that we are finish homeschool each day, mainly we are done before lunchtime, thats a good day!

12:30pm Lunchtime for the 3 little ones, I make lunch, clean kitchen!

1:30pm If its not too cold, the boys go outside and play, J sometimes goes out with them, if she is not napping.

2:30pm I start dinner, if I have meat to put in the oven, I prepare that to go in the oven so it can be ready for dinner.

3:00pm - 5:00pm I try to sit down for a few (LOL) and watch a little TV, but 9 times out of 10 that doesn't happen.  I also have to go get twins from band practice at 4:30pm so then I might stop in at the consignment shop or library!

5:30pm eat dinner, clean up kitchen (all the kiddies have a chore in the kitchen, so it gets cleaned very fast, which is great)

6:00pm-8:00pm family time, shower time, study time, get ready for the next day!

8:00pm family prayer time, and kiddies off to bed!
8:30pm Hubbie and I do our insane workout for 35 minutes
9:15 shower, go through my email, relax with hubbie until my eyes close LOL

Now my day is not like this every day, we also go to the library during the day, and on Tuesday we have homeschool co-op in the afternoon!

I also have a small cupcake and cookie business where I have a couple of orders during the week that I have to fill, and I also donate my treats to different organizations around my town.  So I am always in the kitchen baking!

I hope you enjoyed my It's a Typical Day Project

Please go tell Pamela hello and follow her blog.  She has become one of my best friends and favorite people here in blog land.  Her heart for the Lord is beautiful and she is an inspiration to me.  I love you girl! XOXO

$20

Does your faith in humanity ever take a hit?

I think our faith in the humanness of people took a bit of a hit the past few weeks with everything that’s been going on with our landlord situation.  You can read about that here.

Right now, I’m typing from a comfy chair in my in-laws living room where we’ll be living for the time being.  We moved out today and we settled the heat situation with the landlord (thank the Lord).

On Thursday evening we took the kids to a local hole in the wall restaurant called the Marshall Diner.  The owners are super kind, they love the kids and are always so wonderful whenever we come in.  My husband and I were stressed out with the moving situation and all that the past month has thrown our way.

A very sweet older couple spoke some nice words to us about the kids and we chit chatted back and forth a bit.  The kids waved and said good bye to them when they left and they wished us a Happy Valentine’s Day.  This is the common friendliness you find in the area and coming from the urban sprawl of Northern Virginia it is SUCH a nice change of pace.

We finished our dinner and when my husband went to pay, the girl at the cash register told us that couple left a $20 bill to put towards our dinner.  I almost cried right then and there.  What a kind gesture.

We may never see that couple again but at that moment I was reminded of the goodness of humanity.  I was reminded of the kindness of strangers.  I was grateful for that moment of encouragement in the middle of a rough patch in our life.

Christmas in February

I'm sharing our Christmas 2012 in February.  Either I'm behind the curve or I like to draw out the holidays into Valentines Day.  Oh, Happy Valentines Day by the way!

REWINDING back to December we spent this Christmas with my parents back in Ohio.  The kids had a WONDERFUL time with Mamaw and Papaw and aunts, uncles & cousins...especially Uncle Clay & Rachael.  We just love getting to spend these special times in Ohio and can't wait for our "Ohio Vacation" in June!  Can anyone say zoo, aquarium, park, picnics and FUN?

So what, you ask, is with the antlers?  It's a Christmas tradition in the DuLaney household!  We also hide a pickle and the one who finds it first wins a prize.  Anyone else have funny family traditions?

And what Ohio Christmas trip would be complete without getting to play in the snow?

Not sure Julia was AS thrilled about the snow time.

{It's a Typical Day Project} Lindsey

Today's {It's a Typical Day Project} mommy has become one of my good good friends even though we live miles and miles apart; she in Ohio and myself in Virginia.  She is a beautiful woman with a sweet countenance and an amazing heart for the Lord.  I think of her OFTEN on my hard days.  As you read about her "typical" day you can't help but be encouraged.  Love you Linds!

Thank you so much, Kelly, for asking me to share a little about our (crazy) day with you.

I am a homeschooling mom to 7 blessings, ages 9-1, with a set of spunky 5 year old twin girls in the
middle.

We don’t have a timed schedule, but certain things in our day our pegged to others. For example,
my kids know they have to get dressed before they sit down to breakfast. They have to clean up the
downstairs before they eat lunch, etc. The outline below is what I strive for our days to be like, but this is
REAL life and we are always open for changes that may occur.

Morning: I get up when Kevin does. I pack his lunch and make breakfast. The kids meander down usually
a few at a time and someone always asks, “What are we having?” I usually have to remind some of them
to head back upstairs and get dressed. The kids help set the table, older ones fetch clothes for the two
youngest boys, and it’s loud and busy! We say the blessing before our meal and then eat. I try to remind
them of the agenda for the day to head off any surprises (meltdowns) that might occur. After we eat,
everyone (those feeling cooperative) helps clear the table, unload clean dishes from the dishwasher &
put their dirty ones in. If supper goes in the crockpot, I put that in. We head to the bathroom for teeth
brushing, face washing, and hair fixing. I have 4 girls that need to have their hair done; this sometimes
takes a long time. Next, we meet in the living room for morning prayers and religion (studying the
Catechism).

School time: Gabriel (9) is using Teaching Textbooks for math this year. He does it on the computer
and it doesn’t require too much help from me. If he has a question, I help him, but he can do it mostly
without my help. I sit at the kitchen table with Sophia (7) and we work through Math, Handwriting,
Language, and Reading. Gabriel joins us after he finishes math and does Handwriting, Language, and
Spelling. Sophia is using Explode the Code online for phonics and heads to the computer to do this.
Lastly, we do either history or science depending on what day it is. If it has been a crazy morning we wait
until after lunch. During school, Hazel and Lucy (5) work on preschool (letter tracing and such) if they
want. Otherwise, they might watch a Leap Frog video with Elizabeth (3) and Nicholas (2) or play in the
playroom—make a gigantic mess. I have to stop school frequently to deal with fights, Oliver (1) getting
into mischief, screaming/crying, you name it. Ideally Oliver takes a nap during this time but lately he’s
been fighting that big time. I dread the transition from one nap to two!

Afternoon: The kids straighten up the messes in the living room, office, and kitchen while I make lunch.
Sometimes the older kids complain that they didn't make the mess. I remind them that we serve Jesus
when we serve others and what a blessing they are to our family when they all pitch in and help. We sit
down to lunch, say the blessing, and I often read aloud while we are eating. Then it’s the same drill as
after breakfast with everyone pitching in to clear the mess. We have chores that we do every afternoon
after lunch. I have a chart (in my notebook right now, if I ever find the time I would like to make it bigger
and hang it up in the kitchen) that I use to help me remember what needs done and whose job it is. The
two little boys take a nap. When our cleaning is finished, it’s time free time. The kids might go outside,
watch a movie, play Wii, If I’m really wiped out, I lie on the couch and doze off!

Evening: Dinner prep, bedroom and playroom pick up, Kevin gets home, craziness continues! Again,
after dinner the kids help with clearing the dishes. They go brush their teeth and put on pajamas while I
finish cleaning up the kitchen. We sit down and read books before bed. Then we say prayers and head to
bed. After they are all settled, I get the baby to sleep and finish straightening up. Usually I have a load or
two of laundry to fold!

No day is perfect. Some days are really hard, but I pray for grace to do a better job the next day. Yes, we
are crazy busy. Yes, it’s really loud here. Yes, it’s hard. At the same time it is a fulfilling, amazing, grace-
filled life that I am so am blessed to have.

{It's a Typical Day Project} Introduction & Our First Contributor

The #1 goal I have in the "children & home management" for 2013 is getting a LIVABLE schedule implemented.  I've experimented with different ways of doing things over the past 2 years and as the kids are getting older & we add new things to our plate with more church time and my at home business need a new one.  I know this will be an ever evolving thing but right now I'm in need of inspiration and I know that if I feel the need for it others probably do as well.

I will be featuring a post a week for the next 9 weeks sharing what a typical day is like in a different household.  The point is to highlight what works, doesn't work, etc in different types of households to spur schedule creativity in our own homes.  I know we all want to include playtime, learning time, creative time as well as new experiences for ourselves and our children and I would love for this series to be a place for moms to reference for just that.

In 2013 my wish is for this blog to be a place of encouragement, acceptance and love for many different moms who are all on the same path of raising our children and being an encourager to our husbands.

My really good IRL friend Andi is here sharing today!  If you don't know Andi you will fall in love like I know the rest of us already have!

Hi! I'm Andi and I write at The Hollie Rogue about my life being a mom to two kids (2 & 4), wife to one, and all my creative adventures in DIY.

  DSC_0060 copy

I'm so happy to be here today and share a little glimpse into what works and what doesn't for our family's daily lives. I'm certainly not an expert, but I have learned some things to help make our lives run a little easier and with less fuss so that we can spend our precious time together doing things that will make lasting memories.

  weekend

Here are a few things that work for our family and our daily schedules:

1. Meal-Planning: I plan our meals for the entire month using a regular calendar. I have some staple days like every Sunday night is just plain pasta with red sauce and Fridays are homemade pizza night. This helps us keep a budget and it also makes dinner time less stressful, because I don't have to waste energy thinking about what we will be having.

2. One-Meat-A-Week: I recently just started this and it goes along with meal planning. Every Monday, I throw either a frozen chicken or beef/venison roast into the crockpot. I then use that in all my meals for the rest of the week (ie: pizza, soup, enchiladas, casseroles, etc). This one little thing has saved us SO much money and it also takes that "cook the meat" step out of my dinnertime routine.

3. Controlled rest time: Our kids have always had very scheduled nap times, but as they get older I have continued to enforce the "rest time" period for a couple of hours in the afternoon. My daughter (almost 4) spends time reading or playing quietly, but understands that rest time is a non-negotiable and most of the time, actually likes the time to play by herself. I also, think having a rest time helps the rest of our day go smoother (mom gets some things done and kids are rested--everyone is happy!).

4. Early Bedtimes: 7:00 is the kids' bedtime and while they are loved on and enjoyed all day long, when it is time for bed, they go to bed and don't wake up until the morning. I value sleep and think that it makes for much more pleasant children if they are fully rested each morning as well. Also, as weird as it sounds, I truly believe that sleep begets sleep. Have you ever put your kids to bed late and then had them wake up super early? That's because, according to the book "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Baby" the more sleep they get, the more they will want to sleep. Sounds strange, but has worked with both of my kids since they were tiny babies. Early bedtimes, also give my husband and I ample time to spend together and unwind from our busy
days.

 mar

Here are a few things we haven't been able to implement successfully:

1. Early Wake-up: I know that getting up early and working out and doing my chores would make our days run smoother, but I'm just not a morning person and though I've tried to implement this, I can't get it to work for us. Any suggestions from you early risers?

2. Daily Chore chart: I like my house to be clean all at the same time so a daily chore chart doesn't work very well for me. I've tried it several times, but I always felt like yes, my bathrooms were clean, but what about the mess of a kitchen? Perhaps, I need to just keep trying and I will find something that can work for my personality. Again, suggestions welcome!

3. Strict Schedules: Though I am a self-diagnosed Type A personality on most things, I prefer to not have my days scheduled away down to the last second. I like our days balanced with times for play, times for learning, times for snuggles, and times for rest. We have a loose schedule on most days and you can see a typical day in our life HERE. I'm cherishing these days before my kids go off to school and we start the rat-race that is part of that phase of their life. For now, our flexible timelines and late wake-ups work for us and that's what we're going to continue.

Thanks again, to Kelly, for asking me to put in my two cents about daily life as a mom to toddlers. I'm looking forward to your comments and suggestions about what works and doesn't work for your family!

Hugs, Andi

2012 Year in Review

Hello everyone!
Welcome to the 2012 Year in Review Link Up!

My co-hosts and I are excited to have you all here at the Covered in Grace- YIR Link Up! We pour our hearts into our blogs. Our time, our energies, our creativity...they are all the tools that build our unique places on the web. Why not highlight our blogging gems from the past twelve months? Let our communities know what we're really proud of putting out there this year.

The Prompt: This year in blog posts…choose a favorite post from each month of 2012 and share.

The Linkup: What are you proud of writing this year? Link up your posts below! Linky will be open for two weeks!

January -  found me 36ish weeks pregnant with our 4th blessing!  A little lady that would be named Julia.  She was born at 39 weeks at 12:16 pm and weighed 5 lbs 7 oz.  She had a LOT of dark brown hair and slept and ate well from the get go.  BLESSED beyond measure by our sweet lady.  My blog however, was not yet born.

February - 9th was the beginning of this blog, The Houtz House Party.  Which truly described our life then and continues to fit well now.  4 little people age 4 and under.  At the time I started this blog Ian was 2 1/2, the twins had just turned 1 and Julia was about 3 weeks old.   You can read my FIRST EVER BLOG POST here.  You can also read a little bit about my SAHM journey herehere & here.

March - came a very important to me blog post.  Something I pray my daughter can read one day and truly understand.  I felt welcomed here in this blogland and felt so truly blessed to be able to share our life with other moms, family far away and establish a space our children will be able to reflect on one day.  I prayed that this space would help them to understand their mama and how much they are loved.

April - I shared J and I's engagement story.

May - I confessed I would like to be part of a commune in this post.

June - left me rambling in a vlog.  And for the record, NO i did NOT run over anything or anyone with my car.

July - I shared a little summer outfit "attempt at fashion" post.

August - I wrote a post sharing the adoption journey of my cousins Justin & Katy.  They are absolutely 2 of my favorite people in the whole wide world and their heart's feel for God's children as He feels for them.

September - I shared how I was limping along.  My prayer is that it encouraged at least one person.

October - I shared with you about having grace when life just seems ridiculous.

November - left me pondering the direction of my blog and some next steps as to how I feel called by God.  How exactly it all goes together I was unsure and I encouraged you to pray those BIG prayers.

December - FINALLY accepted and outlined a plan to follow what it is I feel called to do in my life right now.  I am going to continue my blog and focus on encouraging women and mothers.  I have a heart for women and encouraging and uplifting them in their walk through wifedom, motherhood and just being a girl.  It's a tough world out there.

Starting in January I am staring a series called "A Day In The Life Project".  I've called upon bloggers and women I truly LOVE to share how they are called to schedule their days with children.  There will be mothers from different walks of life, ages of children, interests, even homeschooling mamas.  I pray this will be a place for all of us to glean positive encouragement and ideas for our daily lives.

I am in the early stages of a new business with Mary Kay.  This business fits in so perfectly with how I feel God has called me to serve women.  When I stumbled upon a video of National Sales Director Julia Burnett's speech at the COMPANY SEMINAR sharing her testimony glorifying God through her work (to hear that specific part fast forward to about 6 minutes into the video) I felt so strongly that this was something I needed to be a part of.  I want to be able to reach out to women like that too.  Don't you just LOVE how God works in so many different avenues of life?

PS:  Because I LOVE you so very much I'm having a Buy One Get One 50% off sale!!!  HURRY HURRY!  It ends 12/31/2012 at MIDNIGHT! Head on over here to get your shop on!!!  (I'll adjust your order to reflect the 50% off item(s) prior to processing your card.  Easy peasy no worries.  :))
